'We should be proud of our girls, they've done well' but they need more development - Ikpeba

Erstwhile Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Victor Ikpeba has said he is pleased with the achievements of the Super Falcons so far, however, he wants more development to women's football in the country.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are by far the most successful international women's  football team in Africa, clinching a record eleven Africa Women's Cup Of Nations titles out of thirteen, with their most recent title in 2018 in Ghana after overpowering the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the final.

The sad part of the story is that the Supremacy of the Super Falcons in Africa has not been repeated on the World stage.

The best achievement of the Super Falcons outside the shores of Africa is reaching the quarterfinals of both the FIFA Women's World Cup and Football at the Summer Olympics.

Victor Ikpeba who in his playing days played as a forward for both club and country as well as clinched the African Nations Cup in 1994 and the Olympics Football Gold Medal in 1996, is of the belief that Women's Football in Nigeria has progressed a whole lot saying it has 'come of age' and needs more development to be able to compete strongly at the world level.

In his chat with brila.net, the former Borussia Dortmund star said: “I think Women’s football (in Nigeria) has come of age, it needs to get to the next level, especially back home.

“We are all looking forward to the day when the (Super) Falcons will get to the finals of the Olympics, the finals of the World Cup."

Recently, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointed American Football Manager Randy Waldrum as new Head Coach of Nigeria Senior Women's Football Team (The Super Falcons) to replace Swede Thomas Dennerby.

Ikpeba further said: “But so far, they’ve done well. I think we should be proud of women football so far. But we still need to develop our female football back home.

“Should we shy away from that? I think that is where we have to get it right because our girls are really passionate about female football."
