The opening stages of the game were played at a frantic tempo, with both sides spurning glorious opportunities to take the lead within two minutes.

As the game began to settle it was United who looked the most likely, and they took a deserved lead after some calamitous Sociedad defending allowed Fernandes the chance to tap into an empty net.

Sociedad started the second half brightly but some clinical finishing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side saw them take complete control of the tie.

Fernandes doubled both his and United's tally for the night with a lovely curling effort, before Marcus Rashford ran through to coolly slot past Alex Remiro.

There was enough time for Daniel James to cap a fine display with a goal as he slotted the ball through the legs of Remiro, with Solskjaer's men taking a commanding lead into the second leg next Thursday. 90min
