Taiwo Awoniyi, Nigeria international, has disclosed, if he is not able to get his UK work permit, he may not return to Liverpool.

The laws states that for an EU-player to be given a work permit he must have played over 75% of his country’s top grade matches over the previous two years.

21-year Awoniyi was part of the Under 23 Eagles that thrashed Libya 4 - 0 last Monday to make it to the final round of the 2020 Olympic qualifier.

He revealed to BBC Sport: “It saddens my heart that it’s been difficult to get a work permit for the past four years.”

“At the end of the season we have to go back to Liverpool to discuss.

“Everyone knows the importance of the work permit and how it works, and that you’d need to play for your national team.

“If you don’t get a chance with your national team then it becomes difficult to get it.

“Personally, I chose Liverpool because I would love to play in the English Premier League for Liverpool.

“If God says it will happen then it will, but if not then I can only go on with my life and career.”

Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015. He now plays for Belgian side Royal Mouscron on loan.
