Napoli forward Dries Mertens has revealed he hopes Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 36 goals in a Serie A season still stands after the 2019-20 campaign.

The Argentine forward, currently at Juventus, scored 36 times for Napoli in the 2015-16 Serie A season, but Lazio ace Ciro Immobile, who has scored 35 this term, threatens to knock him off his throne.

Napoli host Lazio in the last match on Saturday and Mertens hopes to avoid seeing a new record set at the San Paolo.

“Ciro has been doing well for many years, he’s a great player and I’m happy for him,” Mertens told Sky Sport Italia.

“We hope, however, that he won’t beat the record of Higuain on Saturday, because it would mean he scored against us.”

Coppa Italia 2019-20 Champions Napoli Legend Diego Maradona took to social media to congratulate Dries Mertens for breaking his goal record at the club.
