Diego Simeone has declared that Atletico Madrid will fight Spanish top flight toppers, Barcelona, for the title after they whitewashed Deportivo Alaves 4 - 0 on
Saturday, with goals from Saul Niguez, Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and Thomas Partey.

Atletico closed up the gap to the leaders to ten points at Alaves after Barcelona defeated Espanyol earlier on Saturday.

Simeone’s side suffered chastening defeats to Juventus in the Champions League and Athletic Bilbao in the league before the international break.

Simeone insists, he is of the belief that Atletico can fight for the title as they prepare to lock horns with League toppers Barcelona next Saturday at Camp Nou.

“What was most pleasing was they understood where we could hurt the opposition the most,” Simeone said after the win at Alaves.

“We can’t lose sight of the fact that, at any point in La Liga, competing is in our nature. And we want to compete for La Liga until our last breath.”
