Aftermath of Porto-Victory: Liverpool's Salah should have been sanctioned with a red card - Phil Dowd

Mohamed Salah should have been sent off for his horror tackle in Liverpool's Champions League victory over Porto.

That's according to former Premier League referee Phil Dowd, who admitted his surprise that match official Antonio Mateu Lahoz opted against reviewing the foul on VAR at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred late on in Liverpool's 2-0 quarter-final win as Salah lunged for the ball and caught Danilo Pereira on the leg with his studs up.

But Salah wasn't punished for the reckless challenge and was very fortunate to get off Scot free.

On BT Sport, Dowd was asked for his opinion on the foul and claims it "endangered the safety" of the Porto star and should have been punished with a red card.

"I have watched it again three or four times and my opinion is - as we are looking at it now - it endangered the safety of the opponent and should have been sanctioned with a red card."

Dowd added: "For me I thought they would have asked him to review the situation so he could have a look himself, but obviously nothing came of it."
