At the Allianz Arena on Saturday, Hannover pulled a goal back through Jonathas' penalty - awarded by VAR - but the half-time substitute was sent off for a second bookable offence four minutes later.
Hannover, who remain six points adrift of outright safety, will be relegated next weekend if 16th-placed Stuttgart avoid defeat at home to Wolfsburg.
