Joelinton scored two goals for the first time in English football, one of them a belter, but the £40million striker’s night will perhaps be best - or worst - remembered for a miss.
In fact, it wasn’t even a miss, that would constitute an attempt at goal. Instead, the Brazilian decided against heading into an empty net from two yards, preferring to see if his mate’s cross would creep inside the post. It didn’t. Jacob Murphy’s delivery hit the woodwork, rolled along the line and was cleared.
Joelinton looked around as if in search of a Russian linesman. All he found was an irate Matt Ritchie wondering why he had passed up the chance of a tap-in.SB on the start to the game:— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) September 23, 2020
"I was delighted. Right from the start Lascelles wins two big towering headers and Sean Longstaff has gone into a challenge just underneath me and it really set the tempo. I thought the first half an hour we blew them away which was good to see." pic.twitter.com/zikgi08w6W
But that is Joelinton, a club-record buy who Steve Bruce last season admitted was 'not a goalscorer’.
He now has six goals from 48 appearances for Newcastle. It says much that two of them came against League One opponents in the FA Cup and another two against League Two Morecambe here.
In fairness, his second was a beauty, a run and dipping drive from distance that flew into the far corner. Bruce said: ‘After speaking to him at half-time (about the miss), he thought it was going in and wanted Jacob to have his goal. He might have to be more selfish.
‘But I was delighted with the one in the top bin. We just have to bring that ability out of him. That won’t do him any harm.’ DailyMail

"He might have to be a bit more selfish. I was delighted when he put one in the top corner & cut in, it was great to see that ability we know he has. We just have to bring it out of him. It won't do him any harm to score two today and contribute the way he did." pic.twitter.com/k2dpXAVuxp
