Champions League: Real Madrid 2-3 Shakhtar - Zinedine Zidane's men messed up in Madrid

Real Madrid Head Coach Zinedine Zidane has said "I am responsible" and will "have to look for solution" after his side were discomfited inside the Alfredo Di Stefano, Madrid by Ukrainian Champions Shakhtar Donetsk in their first encounter of the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.

Zidane blamed himself for "a bad night" after Real Madrid who have clinched the European Cup a record 13 times, were embarrassed right inside their temporary home ground in Spain.

The visitors fielded more of their youth-team players after 19 Covid-19 positive tests which forced them to lock horns with their hosts without 13 first-team players.

Shakhtar Donetsk Portuguese Manager Luis Castro's young side breezed through the Los Blancos and netted three times before halftime at the empty Alfredo Di Stefano training ground.

Tete opened scoring for The Miners in the 29th minute, Raphael Varane netted in his own net in the 33rd minute and Solomon made it three in the 42nd minute.

Three goals down, Madrid pulled one back through Croatian midfield maestro Luka Modric in the 54th minute and Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior made it two five minutes later.

Real Madrid lost their opening Champions League encounter 2-3 to a very young Shakhtar Donetsk side.

After the loss, Los Blancos Manager Zinedine Zidane said: "I did not see the team as I wanted and when you do not see the team as you wanted it is your fault.

"It's a bad game, a bad night. I'm the coach and it's up to me to find the solution.

"We deserve the criticism, all of us, and me first. Luckily we had a reaction in the second half because they don't deserve that, they are champions and it bothers me.

"I am responsible and I have to look for solutions because that cannot happen."
