Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made two crucial stoppage-time saves to ensure the Citizens are denied victory, leaving City on the sixth spot of the table, five points behind toppers Tottenham Hotspur.

Guardiola said: "It will be a long season but if you want to be up there we have to win here and we could not do it.

"We created chances, we controlled it but you have to win. This game works on results."

Man City looked on course to a fine triumph over West Brom when German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan netted for the hosts in the 30th minute but Portuguese defender Ruben Dias cancelled his teammate's goal when he hit the back of his own net just two minutes to the end of the first half.
